Honoring Courage and Discipline: A Special Encounter with the Indian Navy in Manila

As part of our Choir Group’s Independence Day preparations, I was blessed with an unforgettable opportunity, to meet and interact with officers of the Indian Navy during their arrival at the Port of Manila for a joint exercise with the Philippine Navy.

The port welcomed three Indian warships, and we had the chance to witness the arrival ceremony of two, organized graciously by the Philippine Navy. We were then taken aboard the majestic INS Shakti, a six-storey vessel that plays a crucial role in supplying ammunition, food, and fuel to other warships during missions. It’s a floating lifeline that travels alongside the fleet, stepping in when resources run low.

What made the visit even more memorable was the warm welcome we received. To our surprise, the Admiral himself joined us in the ship's mess and personally introduced us to his team, many of whom were inspiring lady officers. He proudly emphasized how role assignments in the Indian Navy are not gender-based, and how women are trusted with significant responsibilities across all departments.

The Admiral spoke with humility and grace, mentioning how rare it is to experience such warmth upon landing, perhaps a nod to the presence of civilians among them that day. He gifted us navy caps and mementos, making each moment feel deeply personal.

But what stayed with me most were his words:

“Our soldiers don’t wait for war to prepare. They train through sleepless nights so that if something fatal occurs, they are ready. Preparedness cannot be rushed.”

This struck a chord with me. It reminded me that resilience isn’t built in crisis—it’s shaped in our everyday discipline. Whether it’s life, work, or service to a cause, we must quietly strengthen ourselves, so that when challenges arise, we don’t crumble.

I was equally inspired by the handcrafted products  carried onboard the ship. The wives of Navy officers are engaged in quasi-NGO activities, empowering women through skill-building and financial independence. Their work beautifully mirrors my own mission of promoting sustainable and inclusive livelihoods through handmade, eco-conscious crafts. It was deeply heartening to see this shared spirit of purpose, even in such a disciplined and strategic environment.

This encounter left me feeling proud, humbled, and reflective. As we gear up to celebrate Independence Day, I carry with me a renewed sense of gratitude, for our armed forces, for their families, and for the quiet courage that keeps them going, even in times of peace.

With respect and pride,
